DOES YOUR THERAPIST REALLY GET YOU?

Image

Seek Transformation. Not Just Treatment.

It was all a façade.

I was bored and emotionally exhausted in therapy.

My therapist would ask thoughtful questions about my emotions, actions, and plans. We exchanged helpful information.

On the surface, we were “making progress.” My depression and anxiety seemed to be easing.

Not true.

Inside, I was silently screaming.

If you’ve ever left therapy thinking, “That was nice… but nothing is changing,” you know exactly what I mean.

I was craving real, substantive change. Provocative analysis.

But weekly sessions, polite verbal exchanges, and slow-paced learning left me disillusioned.

After nine months, I ended therapy…basically where I started. A year later, I tried again with a different therapist.

Eight therapists. Same cycle, repeated over the years.

My Credibility Comes From Both Sides of the Chair

I kept asking myself: Why don’t these credentialed therapists get me?

Now I know the answer.

Most of the therapies were focused on “treating” my depression so I could function better in life, work, and relationships.

But for high-functioning depressed leaders like me, a treatment model focused on “functioning” is often the problem.

Because I had been functioning brilliantly for years, while my inner world was getting dark.

This is what gets missed…

Many depressed people aren’t always the saddest.

They’re often the most polished.

Perfect performance. Private depletion.

Their smile is a strategy. And also, a mask.

What I needed wasn’t better functioning.

I needed a reboot, to be awakened…

Truthfully. Directly. And faster than, “Let’s discuss more next week.”

That’s the difference between a therapy that helps you cope…and therapy that helps you thrive.

That disillusionment became my U-turn.

The Approach that Changed Everything

So, I decided to become the therapist I wish I’d had during my struggling years.

After 30 years of research and clinical work, here’s the clearest evidence I’ve found:

Depression is often rooted in unfulfilled emotional needs and an unfinished life path, as documented in my book, “You Are Not Depressed. You Are Un-Finished.

My research shows depression is not always about broken minds or chemical imbalances.

Most often, it’s about the broken hearts, and the sorrow of living shrunken lives.

Depression is a protest sign.

Like a prisoner’s hunger strike, depression is your mind protesting by saying:

  • “I’m done being functional while empty.”
  • “I’m tired of waiting, tolerating, and feeling unseen.”
  • “I’m done surviving. I’m here to live.”

Depression is trying to get your attention:
STOP.
This is not working.
Do something.

Symptom-first therapy is often drawn out, costly, and inconclusive, because the real drivers of depression are seldom touched. And in many cases, depression resurfaces again and again.

The real drivers, as my research showed, are the Seven Emotional Rights.

These seven Rights are the universal and timeless truths for human motivation, growth, and happiness. These Rights are as foundational as our DNA.

And…they are the antidote to depression.

The Rights are:
To belong and be loved, seen, safe, and valued.
To feel complete and whole, free from past pain, grounded in my truth.
To live boundless, alive in my body, potent in my impact.
To make my mark, and soar into my calling.

Two Must-Haves for Real Transformation

1) Restore Your Emotional Rights
Pivot from managing symptoms to living in the truth of your Emotional Rights. Depression and anxiety often signal that your Rights have been dormant, violated, or dismissed for too long.

2) Restore Your Nervous System
To transform, you must become “whole” again. Illness often reflects emotional, physical, or spiritual fragmentation. This work encompasses the regulation of the nervous system and the resolution of trauma-survival patterns.

What This Looks Like in Real Life

I know this method works because I’ve guided many professionals in their own transformation.

Here’s what a recent client shared:

“I’ve worked with numerous therapists over the years. Dr. Mehran is the only one who truly understood me and consistently challenged me in a productive way. Our sessions were calm, direct, and purposeful. He asked insightful questions that got to the root of issues almost immediately.”
—Lauren

Lauren’s term “understood” matters.

Feeling understood is elemental for real change.
