How do you tell if you’re getting better emotionally?
Healing doesn’t always feel like happiness.
It often means you’re clearer. Calmer. Harder to hijack.
As a leader, you have likely engaged in coaching, therapy, and self-help books and apps.
You might expect healing (from depression, trauma, pain) to look like waking up one morning…and “feeling better.” Bright. Motivated. Back to crushing it.
That’s not how healing happens in real life.
Healing is usually subtle.
More honest.
Often inconvenient.
Sometimes healing looks like you’re getting “worse.”
Why? Because you’re no longer numbing, tolerating, or over-performing.
Let me ask you the same question I ask my clients:
What if your healing simply begins by refusing the lifestyle that’s been shrinking you?
10 signs you’re truly healing. Do you see any of these in your life?
1️⃣ Boundaries: Your “No” shows up before your “Yes.”
You start setting limits. You push back. You stop explaining yourself ad nauseam.
That’s not selfishness. That’s your nervous system saying: “No more. I’m done with self-abandonment.”
2️⃣ Agency: You feel more in control. Less performing.
Your voice becomes stronger. Your expressions are more honest.
You hold your ground. Less pleasing. Others may see you as difficult or edgy.
This can feel daunting because the “nice, easy, dependable you” has been your identity.
But agency is a return of your true self-respect.
3️⃣ Belonging: Your relationships get…clearer.
You begin to see who drains you. Who dodges you. Who only likes you compliant. And who cares.
You deepen the right bonds. And end the wrong ones.
That can feel like loneliness at first. It’s actually discernment.
4️⃣ Body: You feel alive again.
Breathing deepens. Chest pressure eases. Gut health improves. Posture shifts. Skin clears.
This is huge. It’s your body abandoning “brace mode.”
Stress hormones, such as constant cortisol and adrenaline, are dropping.
You’re not just thinking differently. You’re living differently.
5️⃣ Pleasure: Joy leaks out in small, surprising ways.
A laugh. A playful moment. A restful sleep. A wave of relief. You sense more, intuit more.
A genuine smile that wasn’t negotiated.
High achievers often distrust joy, because it feels frivolous.
But joy is not a distraction. It’s a signal: you’re blooming.
6️⃣ Passion: Intimacy becomes more “fun,” not just “fine.”
Romance improves. Sensuality and sex feel reciprocal, playful, nurturing.
This matters because depression often turns intimacy into a task.
Healing makes intimacy feel like a joint play again.
7️⃣ Letting go: You start shedding physically and emotionally.
Decluttering. Cleansing. Changing your style. Hair, clothes, furniture… even your car.
This isn’t random.
It’s your psyche saying: “The old version of me doesn’t fit anymore.”
8️⃣ Pain: Your pain begins to move, then release.
You feel unfamiliar cycles: contraction and release… and then more flow and ease.
Read that again: pain moving is different than pain stuck.
Depression was once signaled by your frozen pain.
Moving pain signals healing.
9️⃣ Grieving: As you grieve, something inside softens.
You begin healing regrets, shame, guilt, anger…especially the pain of not being seen, heard, held, protected, or loved.
This phase can feel brutal. Instances of silent howling.
But grief is not a collapse. Grief is love finally getting a voice.
Expressing grief brings you to the “here and now” where life happens.
🔟 Addictions: Your substitutions lose their grip.
Less numbing. Less escaping. Less compulsive “relief.”
Addictions start to lessen; scrolling, binge eating, gambling, promiscuity, porn, and more.
Not because you “got disciplined.”
Because you’re finally getting what you were substituting for.
A final thought before you go…
When you’re healing, you may also be harder to manipulate.
Harder to rush, to push.
Harder to guilt.
Harder to keep in a life that looks successful but feels quietly violating.
And that is a very good sign.
If you saw yourself in 2–3 of these signs, I’d love to support you in accelerating what’s fully possible for you.
